What is Motor Coaching?
Motor Coaching is defined as providing guidance and support to Autistic individuals to improve their overall motor skills (including both fine motor and gross motor), motor planning, sequencing, and coordination.
Why does it matter?
Motor coaching is important because motor skills can be challenging for Autistic individuals. Thus, the quicker and more it is addressed and improved upon, the more functional and independent Autistic individuals will become with their motor abilities in daily activities.
Some activities that support an Autistic child in improving motor coordination is yoga and swimming.

Practicing Motor Coaching
-
Use Clear and Concise Instructions
When supporting an Autistic child with motor planning, it is important to limit language in order to minimize confusion. Break down the complex task into more manageable steps for improved motor execution. Be gentle and direct.
-
Provide Various Cues
Use visual, auditory, and tactile cues in addition to verbal cues. Physically demonstrate and model the task for the child to better understand the expectations. Use sounds and or gentle taps to cue as needed.
-
Encourage Repetition and Practice
Repetition is key in an Autistic child’s motor skill development. Thus, offer and encourage regular opportunities for practice.
