To minimize sensory overload from Autistic students, try implementing:
- slightly dimmed lighting
- limited wall decorations
- sensory supported seats/chairs
Examples of communication supports to provide an inclusive environment:
- hand under hand to facilitate writing on horizontal surface (e.g., paper, white board, etc.)
- letter boarding to communicate via spelling
- Typing to Communicate/keyboarding (important to adjust to eye level)
- choice boards
- communication boards
- Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) device (low tech and high tech)
- American Sign Language (ASL)
